NOVELTY ITEMS

Novelty items for tourists were often made in early Amana. Many wood workers enjoyed this as a hobby on the side. These animals were made out of walnuts, pipe cleaners, and paint. Walnuts were made into squirrels, rabbits, skunks, and more..all cute. Nut bowls were also made. There were many walnut trees in the area used for furniture and its fruit for nut cakes so it was a natural hobby material. Many were kept in the family but also sold in stores for tourist trade and a reminder of a lovely visit to the Amana villages.
