The Rabatt is an architectural feature credited to Joseph Prestele, an artist and horticulturist who had a strong sense of order and loved plants. The Rabatt is an elevated planter made of wood or concrete built along the foundation of the... houses. Herbs and flowers were planted there, in old Amana as they are today. Most were 2-3 feet wide and several feet long in front, side, and back of the house. Some have a simple diamond pattern, others are plain. They provided for extra planting space. The Rabatt and trellises, with colourful plants, added nice, decorative touches to otherwise plain facades.
